EnhanceMail bundle version 2.1 1997/11/24

[ Note to archive maintainers: as of version 2.0b5, EnhanceMail 2.x
works again with both Mail 3.3 and Mail 4.x (verified up to 4.1),
and thus supersedes all previous versions. Previous EnhanceMail 2.x
versions up to 2.0b4 did _not_ supersede EnhanceMail 1.x versions.
EnhanceMail 1.x works with Mail 3.3. EnhanceMail 2.0b1-4 worked with
  Mail 4.0 only. ]

This package contains the EnhanceMail bundle. This bundle extends the
capabilities of Mail 3.3 / 4.x by adding quoting, signatures, X face
support, a distributed, cached user-image database, full-text indices
PGP encryption / decryption / signatures, unread-mail indicators in
Mailboxes panel, smiley expansion and a number of other features.
To enable it install EnhanceMail.bundle anywhere in the mail bundle
path (~/Library/Mail, /LocalLibrary/Mail, /NextLibrary/Mail, and the
Mail application wrapper itself) and restart Mail. The recommended
location for system-wide installation is /LocalLibrary/Mail, for
personal installation ~/Library/Mail. After installing the bundle, a
more detailed description of its capabilities can be found at the end
of the Mail.app online help.

The base EnhanceMail distribution contains the full source code and an
Installer package containing a precompiled quad-fat bundle, localized
for English only. Non-English language add-ons are available as
separate Installer package distributions.

Note that as of version 2.0b5 this bundle works again with _all_ Mail
versions starting with 3.3. Earlier 2.x versions _only_ worked with
Mail 4.x. Earlier versions of Mail can not be extended by external
bundles. There are reports of success with running newer versions of
Mail with older versions of Nextstep. In those cases the version of
EnhanceMail appropriate for the used version of Mail should also work.
However this remains a matter of trial and error.

    New perpetrator (as of 2.0b5):

	Tom Hageman <tom@basil.icce.rug.nl>

    Original perpetrator:

	Carl Edman <cedman@lynx.ps.uci.edu>

[ New perpetrator's notes: Carl doesn't do NeXTstep anymore, so his
release of EnhanceMail-2.0b4 was pretty much his last.
While I can't promise Carl's level of commitment, you can for now send
your comments, bugreports etc. regarding EnhanceMail to:

        <enhancemail@basil.icce.rug.nl>

See the file TODO in the source distribution for a list of known
problems, and our wishlist of features that may make it into
EnhanceMail in a future release. In the meantime, share and enjoy! ]

Changes:

2.0b6 -> 2.1
(*) German online help, contributed by David Andel <david@nexttoyou.de>

(*) I (Tom Hageman) am solely responsible for the mutilation, if any, of
the Japanese Preferences panels in the base distribution. I don't
have NS3.3J, nor do I know a single character of Japanese, so
basically I was stumbling in the dark...

(*) See the file "hidden-defaults.txt" for a list of `secret' Mail.app
     user preferences.

(*) Pre-compiled bundle is now distributed in an Installer package.

(*) EnhanceMail finally has its own logos :-) -- you'll encounter it in
the online Help, the Info panel and the Installer package. New
Info and Version History help sections.

(*) Updated look-and-feel of the Preferences panels. Saving
preferences should be a lot faster now. Lazy loading of XImageURL
image into preferences panel (which should fix Tomi's "ImageServer
not started" due to .jpeg/.gif images, problem.) Add UI for
HTTPProxy, and for some future features.

(*) Got rid of those pesky PGP alert panels on decryption /
signature-check thanks to Gerben. PGP status is now shown in
additional X-PGP-{Result,Notice,Warning} headers (even if the
     decryption / signature check fails.)

(*) Workaround braindead exit status reported by pgp (2.6.3i at least)
after successfully decoding encrypted, unsigned message (life is
     ridiculous.)

(*) Signatures in Compose windows now switch style according to the
format button even after a quote has been inserted. This should
(finally) behave exactly as in EM1.3.

(*) Smiley substitution now avoids uuencoded text regions.

(*) Add periodic mail check in Mailboxes panel.

(*) More Mailboxes panel efficiency improvements.

(*) Add Smiley-inspector in Preferences.

(*) Add unread mail count to Mailreader's status line.

(*) Don't auto-compact indexed mailboxes (for now).

(*) Add Control-deliver as a means to overrule auto-Spellcheck
(this has the side-effect not to archive the message, whereas
Alt-Deliver has the side-effect of forcing archival.)
Remove the invokation of spell-check on Alt/Ctrl-Deliver if
     auto-Spellcheck is off.

(*) Display silhouette image for failed XImageURL downloads.

Earlier changes are listed in "Version History" in EnhanceMail's online help.
